Day 2 - Late Start!!!

Depart Lake Morena

Arrive Mile 36.1

After a rather exhausting 1st day we were slow getting started on Day 2.

The evening had been extremely windy and cold when we arrived into camp, and so we set about putting up tents and getting dinner cooked and were in bed by 9.

The Camp Warden told us we would have a spectacular walk but to be aware the weather was due to change on Thursday with a high of 8 degrees and rain. The exact opposite of this morning.

Before I go on I would like to acknowledge the terrific job done on me by Caroline Hiles from the Downtown Sports Clinic. Caroline has been my physio for many years and made sure  I was fit for the trail. I mentioned on my opening blog my back injury, as a result of falling on the ice, and it was Caroline who helped put me back together for this trip. Special thanks also to Sonia who is the Sports Clinics receptionist and who often fit me in for treatment at short notice. Thanks guys I’m indebted to you.

The scenery was nothing like I was expecting, and Trail Angel Mark had warned in the drive to Campo to start the walk. One minute we were on a ridge and the next we were in a Pine forest, such is the rich diversity in this land.

On the trail you get to meet a lot of interesting people and we spent a lot of time walking and talking with a young Swiss women by the name of Lea, who it turns out is in the Swiss police force. Turns out Lea was married last September but her husband couldn't join her, as he is a Doctor and started his own practice last October.

We walked with Lea for a lot of the afternoons before saying our goodbyes at her campground. We still had 5-6 miles to go and had to detour to a campground for life’s precious fuel, water. The detour would add 1.6 miles to our journey, and as you have probably guessed it was downhill before coming back uphill. That rest of the day was a real slog as it was mostly uphill and we had added another 7-8 lbs of weight to our packs.

We finally made camp around 6 pm and set up our tents under an old Oak tree. It was a lovely spot and we shared it with two other campers who were also on the trail.

After dinner I noticed the most incredible moon and the stars were rampant as we were in the middle of nowhere!
